Site Suitability

1. Select the plant species you're interested in running a site assessment.
2. In the pop-up window, you will see details of the related site suitability model (scores) to different classes for relevant factors.
3. Select an appropriate color schema for your result map
4. Click "Run Assessment" to calculate a suitability map for the plant species.
5. Once the result layer shows up, you can pan and zoom the map to view more details.
6. You can show / hide the result layer in layer switcher by checking / unchecking the layer name.

The PlantShoe forest farming suitability tool is not intended nor designed to help users find native woodland botanicals. It is not a plant hunting tool, but a web-based siting device that evaluates a geographic selection and identifies habitat areas which are potentially suitable for planting select species. The analysis is relative and the output will change according to the geographic selection. Criteria are based upon the best available literature and users must register and sign-in. Users receive a rating of an actual or potential site, but the tool has the added features of including soils data (USDA/NRCS), topography, and some climate data. Note that the underlying data for soil, climate and topography are from best available sources, however, data may not accurately reflect actual site conditions. While the tool can give a first approximation of site suitability, a more detailed, on-site appraisal should eventually be pursued if an area looks promising. Next steps could include having an extension professional or consultant visit the site for a more detailed assessment and to submit soil samples for testing. Again, this is not for hunting plants, but rather a resource for users that seek to prioritize woodland areas for planting of native botanicals. Furthermore, it does not guarantee successful cultivation. Instead, it helps identify areas where planting may be more appropriate compared to others in the query. The final decision and farming success rest with the user.
